Panchakarma Centre
The word Pancha stands for five & the karma stands for procedure. Panchakarma therapy is a unique part of Ayurveda; the ancient Indian health system. These five procedures are Vaman, Virechan, Basti, Nasya & Raktamokshan.The aim of these five procedures is to detoxify the body. It is a strong belief of Ayurvedic system that Panchakarma of the body is must for radical elimination of toxins. Panchakarma can be done for almost all diseases & also in healthy individuals to maintain health.

The Panchakarma centre is being developed in the Govt. Ayurvedic Dispensary, Nijjran. The Panchakarma centre will be first of its kind i.e. being aided by NRI & local donors of a village of Punjab. The medical facility will be provided by Dr. Chetan Mehta, Sh. B.D Sharma & their team.
The estimated running expenditure of the centre is approx. 3.5 - 4 lacs per annum
Dr. Chetan Mehta, in charge of the dispensary is M.D in Panchakarma therapy. He has done his post graduation from National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur. He is the only qualified specialist of Panchakarma therapy in Punjab. He has got extensive training in both Ayurvedic & keraliya Panchakarma. He has vast experience of Panchakarma in various diseases & in complicated cases. He has attended many national & international seminars, workshops on Panchakarma & presented scientific research papers in various national seminars & journals. His areas of interest are Joint diseases, Skin diseases, Migraine, Computer vision syndrome, Insomnia, Gastrointestinal diseases, Geriatrics & Rejuvenation.

Panchakarma is done in three phases - Pooravakarma, Pradhankarma & Paschatkarma.
First phase is known as poorvakarma. Poorvakarma is done with

Pachan
Herbal medicine is given to digest toxins.
Snehan
It means oleation. It is done by two ways either by massage with medicated oils or by internal administration of cow ghee/ medicated ghee.

Swedan
It means fomentation. It is generally done by herbal medicinal steam bath
 

Second phase is known as Pradhan karma i.e. main procedures.

Vaman
In this procedure vomiting is induced with herbal decoctions to detoxify the body. This is indicated in Asthma, Psoriasis, Leucoderma, Acne, other skin diseases & Rejuvenation.
Virechan
In this procedure purgation is induced with herbal medicines to detoxify the body. It is indicated in Asthma, Jaundice, Skin diseases, Rejuvenation etc.

Basti
In this enema of decoctions & oils are given to detoxify the body. It is indicated mainly in neurological & musculoskeletal conditions.
Nasya
It is a nasal therapy. Medicinal oils/decoctions/milk/juices are instilled in nose. It is indicated in Sinusitis, Headache, Migraine, Insomnia, cervical spondylosis, facial paralysis etc.

Raktamokshana
It means bloodletting. It is done with syringe/scalpel/leeches. It is indicated in skin conditions, sciatica etc.
 

Third phase is known as paschat karma i.e. post-procedures.
This is mainly a resting/relaxation phase. A well planned light diet schedule is recommended to the patient.Apart from the classical Ayurvedic Panchakarma procedures some of the keraliya Panchakarma procedures will also be done at this centre. These procedures are-

Shirodhara
In this procedure while patient is lying on the table, oil/herbal decoction/ milk processed with herbs etc. It is indicated in Headache, insomnia, hypertension, lack of concentration, loss of memory, psoriasis, burning sensation over the body etc..
Katibasti
In this procedure a boundary wall like ring is made with black gram flour over the low back and the medicated oil is filled in this. The luke warm oil is kept for 30-45 minutes.

Janubasti
In this procedure boundary wall ring is made over the knee and medicated oil is filled and kept for 30-45 minutes. This is indicated in osteoarthritis and other painful conditions of the knee joint.
Patrpinda sweda
In this procedure massage & fomentation is done all over the body or a local part with boluses (potli) made of medicated leaves like errand, nirgundi etc. it is indicated in arthritis, sciatica, cervical spondylosis etc.

Shalishashtik pinda sweda
In this procedure massage & fomentation is done with boluses made of semisolid gruel (khichdi) made of shali rice dipped in the decoction of bala. It is indicated in arthritis, cerebral palsy, motor neuron disease, paralysis etc.
Akshitarpana
In this procedure boundary wall ring is made around the eyes and medicated ghee is filled. It is indicated in various eye diseases.
